I understand you don't know what he meant when he said that as it has been explained several times incuding his 60 minutes interview. But it plays well with some crowds.
As for the clerics dictating what he says that's just not true. They have told him to calm down some of his rhetoric and he has expecially after the elections where being anti-American was seen as a good thing.
