I wasn't referring to the AMD exec trashing Itanium, but to the quote from the very Intel exec who approved the Itanium project trashing it.

Classic Christiansen Effect. Even though it's a quote from the competition, it's still an important thing to remember. As time goes on, the barrier for competing chips goes down, because it gets less expensive to integrate current technologies into lower margin designs. Therefore, in order to succeed, IPF needs to be on the leading edge always going forward, or else it will be marginalized by less expensive solutions. Of course, the same applies to Power, etc.
