I don't think it's selling from holders in the $1's... Why would you convert to common? I'd just sell the warrant outright when/if it hits my target of $4.50+

You have described the problem. Lots of folks bought more warrants than they really want to exercise. The warrants provide leverage, but unless you have the cash to exercise, at some point you have to take your gains and move on.
