ahhh good old Bre-X is the scam you're talking about. The most of the master minds behind that scam got what they deserved though, karma at it's best:

OT. Good ole Brex, I bought a couple of shares back then just for a lotto ticket, when the geologist jumped out of the helicopter and into the jungle below, I knew it was all over. I still have a stock certificate somewhere.

You just never know mate! One of the reasons I am still trading is that I never put all my money in one stock, take profits when I can and just know that anything can happen any time.
