You are very correct in saying

no one told them to invest and if they did, they had the choice to sell or hold

It is all up to the person who hits the buy/hold/sell trigger to make that decision. Each to his own. Just like it is each to his own in the opinion they have on any given stock. Right?

You are even so more correct in saying

We have rode this ride on the way down

and there will be those that choose to get in when they perceive it has hit bottom again. Then your statement will again be true.
