I agree with that, but the question was - Given the size of WL, if they do NOT convert debt to equity and let the debt default, would WL go down ? Why would they get hands dirty if its not big enough to affect their survival.

slawmd27 addressed it a bit that it would lead to 50% rise in stockholder equity.
