They are cancelled... You have it on your posession go to the transfer agent and require them to take those out of the market capital of the company.
It is like they are paying off a debt... For the company to grow they need capital, so they issue shares. if they feel confident that the company will start to run by itself they can take those out of the market to reduce the outstanding number and consequently reduce the shareholders obligations
