He started school in 1989 and got his honorary PhD in 2004, 15 years later. I highly doubt his schooling that began in 1989 had anything to do with his 2004 honorary doctorate most likely from MIT since he had been solving problems for MIT since 2002. He began working for MIT as a researcher in 2003.
