PaylPal is used for far more things than just Ebay. I'm not exactly sure why the company has PayPal so I will not venture a guess. Again, the company now realizes it was not well received by many potential subscribers and they are working to quickly change it.

PayPal is very popular outside of eBay.

There is nothing negative about PayPal per se, excpet that there is a small percentage of people who don't use it because they don't like it, have had issues where PayPal has locked them out of their account because they goofed up and PayPal was trying to protect their account, and some people just are confused about it and avoid unknowns.

PayPal is probably one of the most, if not THE most secure way to exchange money via the internet, using 132-bit encrytion to better insure against the chance of identity or credit card theft, which I can personally speak to both. I for one ALWAYS look FIRST for a product provider who is conscientious enough to think about ME by incorporating the services of PayPal before I'll trust my personal security with someone who doesn't!

I love paypal. Very easy and once setup (mine for many years) it takes away a lot of hassle of inputting info.
