Re: Haiti disaster relief

Other organizations to consider:

http://doctorswithoutborders.org/
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières

http://www.americares.org/

http://www.unicefusa.org/
UNICEF (as mentioned in previous post.)

And to check how well your donations may be spent:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/
(Their site seems slow at the moment.)

P.S., I hate to sound very cynical, but expect scams and phishing to show up soon on the heels of so much good will.

>>IHUB members are blessed to be trading and making money<<

That is so true and even if not trading and making money, we're still fortunate not to have endured such a tragedy. Never know when or if you'll need help so it's best to give when you can.....

Just did my part...hope others will too!

No offense but I would rather donate it to the suffering people in this country first, like st. judes or something, children in this country could use the help just as bad,we have many starving and living in shelters and sick here, wonder why our government does not take such priority towards the ailing here. I donate to my favorite charity here and if I can spare some to other countries I will. Just one to think about

That is an excellent idea. We as a family sat down the other night and went through a week's worth of what we spend on things and decided that a lot of the things we buy we don't need.

We're contributing that money to the Salvation Army for the relief effort in Haiti for the next several months.

Some people will use disasters to take advantage of others.

Try if possible to verify the agency your donating too gets the money into the hands of the people in need.

Although not a member of the Catholic Church I am hearing they are one of the few that are helping the most in this area and are not corrupt.

Whatever anyone gives donation wise says volumes about their heart.

Well done.

Haiti Earthquake Relief
http://www.whitehouse.gov/HaitiEarthquake

The White House Blog
A Call with President Preval of Haiti
January 15, 2010 at 11:13 AM EST

A description of the call between President Obama and President Preval of Haiti that was just released:

President Obama spoke for roughly thirty minutes with President Preval of Haiti this morning. President Obama said that the world has been devastated by the loss and suffering in Haiti, and pledged the full support of the American people for the government and people of Haiti as it relates to both the immediate recovery effort, and the long-term rebuilding effort. President Preval said that he has been touched by the friendship of the American people, and expressed his condolences for the loss of American citizens in Haiti. He said that the needs are great, that relief is now flowing in to the people of Haiti, and noted the support that has come from both America and many other countries from the region and around the world. The two Presidents underscored the need to closely coordinate assistance efforts among the various parties, including the Haitian government, the United Nations, the United States and the many international partners and aid organizations on the ground. President Obama underscored his commitment to supporting the government and people of Haiti through his team on the ground. President Preval closed by passing a message to the American people, "from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of the Haitian people, thank you, thank you, thank you."

Updated with new links, from all of you, to other charities working to help the Haitians.

The overwhelming support shown by the people here has been tremendous.

On a personal note, reminds me that even though some of you are complete knuckleheads at times, we have a lot of generous folks in our iHub community that come through when it counts. :)

re: Haiti donations to American Red Cross

You can add iTunes to the list, it's as easy as buying a song. Anyone with an account should be getting an email, if not you can find a link on the iTunes store home page.. There are several donation options from $5 to $200

Here's another organization to consider:

www.idealgoodness.com

if you sign up with them you donate mealpacks for seven countries and one of them is Haiti.

I'm already doing it for 2 months. It feels great to be able to help the people in need.

You could also donate food and water to your local Red Cross, I prefer this method over money as there already been reports from our Govt stating money is not being used as it should be.

The food donation route is one of the best.
May they recover in God speed

Shelly/I-Hub....Thanks so much for posting the info on aid to Haiti. Since the earthquake, I have been torn apart by the
videos of death, destruction, confunsion, thirst and starvation,
etc. but reluctant to contribute to some major relief organizations that have a reputation of being "top-heavy" with
administration costs. Your list provided several that I could
be very comfortable with, so I made my $500 donation to a medical
mission charity. I will try to do more if I can sell some "toys".

Thanks again, and I hope I am only one of a horde of I-Hubbers
coming to the aid of Haiti.

Donate frequent flyer miles or "rewards."

The Red Cross accepts frequent flyer miles to help personnel reach afflicted areas.

Donated Frequent Flyer Miles Help the Red Cross Go Farther.
While millions of Americans accrue frequent flyer miles through reward programs, the number of people who actually use them is considerably smaller. Through the generosity of several major airlines, the American Red Cross can receive donations of frequent flyer miles.

Some credit card "rewards programs" give better returns on points donated to charity than for material goods. If "reward points" sit in your credit card account doing nothing, then think about it.
