"Lefty" is just a term to identify the "left" party in partisan politics. I don't see it as derogatory, nor would I see "righty" as derogatory.

Lefty isn't a derogatory word but when someone blames "Lefties" for everything wrong in his world it becomes derogatory.

I don't use the word "wingnut" to describe everyone I disagree with. Here's the definition from the Urban Dictionary:

n. An outspoken, irrational person with deeply-held, nominally conservative, political views. A person who chooses on principle to be flagrantly ignorant. A "right-wing nut".
