the fabs were built in anticipation of demand from communications and computing. the communication demand hasn't yet developed although with a wimax infrastructure likely in the future and the telcos now talking about fiber to the premises it may yet develop.

however since the capacity is in place it is possible for intel to use it to competitive advantage by producing die that are larger than would have been produced otherwise with presumably increased performance.

how would amd compete if even celerons were dual core and 64bit capable?

I don't know why Intel just doesn't buy nvidia...with all that fab space they could buy a large position in NVIDIA and make all those video processors at 90-65nm...this could be a large market going forward...my head hurts sometimes when I think of the stupidity...
