coydog: I was a ferocious amateur player. A number of pros wouldn't set foot on a court with me. However, there was no financial incentive for me to play professionally. I knew quite a few players. They would wager on days off and one was suspended for a year and bet almost every day. They lost 98% of the time. They were horrendous gamblers. I would look for hot players or show offs. One player, a deadly frontcourter, would usually only be motivated to turn it on when some lady in the crowd caught his eye. The rest of the time, he'd just mail in his play.
I was in CT, at the time, of the SI article. I believe that Juan was exonerated. Who did get caught was the player manager. He deliberately set certain games to be unbalanced. However, folks, like me, would be all over them also.
There are so many variables in jai alai, for gambling, including mathematics, that one would have to have many players involved. Now if the management, itself, fixed the games, then they could indeed cover it up.
Also I used to chat with Buddy Berenson, in the crowd. He controlled World Jai Alai. He died about ten years ago.
