i remember being annoyed that 'Planned Obsolescence' was part of a course curriculum for some engineers at the technological university I attended. It quickly destroyed my naive view of an engineer as someone who tries to build lasting technology (coming from a physicists viewpoint.) There was a running joke among the physicists that engineers not only don't care about 'why' something works, now they are purposely building things so that they don't work..
