(Edited to Add) Losmashrt,

IMO, if GOOG intends to provide their own wireless service it is because they intend to capture the significant revenue stream (approx. 35-40% of Neom's revenues) that Neom is rumored (on this board) to be offering to the carriers. It also places GOOG in an outstanding position to accomplish their all-encompassing objective...to remove control from the carriers and eliminate the walls the carriers have enjoyed for so long. By owning their own wireless network they gain a significant edge toward complete control over bringing down the walls across the wireless industry.

Google would likely eliminate walls within their own environment, which would in turn create pressures for the other carriers to follow suit since consumers would now have greater flexibilities and more 'individual' choices. IMO, Google will place the "I" in we ;)

IMO, a very smart move. The question then becomes whether Google would then seek to participate in a consortium, or even whether this might pose a problem for the consortium.

In my mind I am now focused on the expected turn-around time for the EU patent resolution. If my memory serves, I believe that originally when the "US" patent dispute was announced, it was stated that it resulted in approx. a '9 month' delay.

I believe Iain first disclosed the EU patent dispute on the August cc after it had been in progress for a spell. On that call Iain stated it would likely be a couple of months before they receive an initial response, and that their would be need for additional folowup that would require a few more months for a final resolution.

Well, from what I recall it did in fact take the two months for the initial response which came in October (I think). A few months from October would place us into February.

While the EU process is a bit different, I am targeting the Feb/March time frame, and hoping for Feb.

I would not expect the process to be hurried since all parties will want this matter resolved without room for further argument. Any attempt to speed the process could potentially raise arguments to further dispute ownership.

All of the above, JMO and pure speculation. Let's hope I am completely off base and that Neom wins the patent dispute tomorrow and the games begin. I am just as anxious as everyone else here.

Edited to Add:
PS: You will recall that CTIA was originally expected to award the clearinghouse this quarter. The fact that there has been no formal announcement to date IMO either means they have either silently awarded the clearinghouse to Neom which resulted in Neom's agreement with Neustar...or they have delayed the award for some particular reason, the likes of which I personally would speculate is tied to the EU dispute and intentions to coordinate efforts with the European standards bodies at the appropriate time.

How's that for a mouth full?

Best,
