Soccer: Not true. Few reader application patents limit the IP to a specific symbology. More often times than not, they don't even use the term barcode. For example, the '048 patent calls it "a data carrier modulated with an index" and then later says this "the index is at least a portion of a Universal Product Code" or "EAN" etc.
