AKPO Is A Gas Field with Oil -TOTAL, Nigeria

13/04/09: www.africaoilgasreport.com

First oil in March 2009; 630 MM BOPD of recoverable Oil; 175,000 BOPD by May 2009; 20 years- Life span of Project; 530 MMscf of gas per day; 320 MMscf/d of gas to Bony LNG; Commissioning by June. KAZEEM JAMES reports.

The AKPO field development project operated by TOTAL, was initially meant to produce more of gas.
In April 2005, NNPC ( Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) farmed in with a 50% stake, thereby giving Petrobas- 24%, Sapetro-10%, Total- 24% stakes in the project.
The OPL 246 in which the field lies, was later changed to OML 130 in 2005. With what is seen as an aggressive Asian entry, CNOOC, in 2006 farmed in, enlarging the partnership into four.
TOTAL’s management says that the project has better economics than the Girassol and Dalia, going by the enormous amount of gas reserves it has. “The AKPO oilfield is a masterpiece and this is owing to its vast reserve of gas,” says Emeka Ugona-Nigeria Interface Manager - AKPO Project, Total Upstream Nigeria Limited - TUPNI. With an output of 530 MMscf of gas per day, 320 MMscf/d of gas will be supplied to train six of LNG, passing through the Amenam field. To achieve this, the company is running 150-kilometre pipeline from FPSO to Amenam production platform. 25 MMscf/d will be used as fuel gas while the rest will be re-injected to maximize condensate recovery. With 44 wells expected, 24 wells have been completed and functioning. 22 wells will be for condensate, 2 wells for gas, while 20 wells will be for water re-injection.
The AKPO gas is intended for Bonny LNG and there is no plan for domestic consideration, says Emeka Ugona.
Budget: The AKPO project has an initial budget earmarked for $5.1 billion, and this budget was meant for 48 wells, but it was reduced to 44 wells. With a reduced number of wells, the budget will automatically be reduced also. Right now, out of the 44 wells, only 24 wells have been completed so far.
