Thanks for the compliment, but I'd never accept the premise.

I think it does matter who your fellow shareholders are, and the focus they have and the approach they take can often matter a lot. There are a LOT of worthy people here, but, I think where you do find a quality group with a focus that you like, that is still most likely to be a result of a quality effort from a management that is enabling it.

I'd rather be responsible for encouraging larger cooperation among shareholders, for encouraging investors interest in acting like owners and being good owners, and be responsible in part for having that cooperative spirit result in the group doing a better job in doing the DD (which, given the thousands you need to cull to find a few good ones, will save you the most work) than I'd want to be responsible for growing a personality cult.

I'd rather have others here because they've learned to do the work, HAVE done the work, and have learned to trust their own judgment, than have them here because of me.

I think (hope) you can put that in similar context as the same sort of thing you'd want to see from a good management team... where picking well and mentoring the employees matters more to them than hiring people to be followers that will make the management look good only by virtue of comparison. As a manager, would you rather hire people that are clearly inferiors that make you look good, or hire people who are WAY better at what they do than you are, who might make you look a tad tarnished when they shine ? It is a value question... with both short term and long term aspects.
