I'm not hockeypond - who by know must be going through withdrawls due to the state of the NHL.

Bulk sampling is usually the step after drilling. You drill to find Kimberlite.

Bulk sampling is used to determine if the Kimberlite has diamonds and/or if the deposit is economically viable (carrots and quality/ton). The larger the bulk sample, the more accurate the prediction.

I think, bulk sampling starts with small samples (10-20 Tons) and as the viability of an economical mine becomes established, larger samples are taken. These additional samples usually do not come from the "same" location in the pipe as they are trying to establish a model of the pipe, trying to pinpoint where the maximum potential in the pipe may be to maximize the diamond:ore ratio.
