#23642 RE: tomm #23641

OT: tomm - Wow!

What an awesome memory. Gibson v. Koufax - holy jeepers would that be something. Maybe not the same thing, but it's why I was hoping for a Schilling v. Clemens and Martinez v. Oswalt World Series this year.

I missed Koufax, but did catch Gibson near the end of his career. In St. Louis vs. the Braves. Hank Aaron fouled one back that landed in my then 7 year old youngest brother's lap ... and was immediately pounced on and grabbed away by a big (and I suspect in retrospect, drunken) jerk who refused to give it back. Gibson was really a treat. Even though Aaron was at the end of his career, it was still great for a kid to get to see him in person.

Oh, one other thing. Busch stadium in the summer = brutal, brutal, brutal. Was there again a few years later during that record heat wave summer when it was over 110 in St. Louis for several days. It was 112 degrees according to the billboard we passed on the way to the ballpark. And they said it was over 120 degrees in the stadium. Lord only knows what temperature the turf was. No offense to the Cards, but that wasn't much fun at all. That stadium is like a concrete and astroturf oven.

And come to think of it, I sure do miss the Saturday game of the week on NBC
