yep... pipe and string up the hole are necessary to maintain the integrity of the hole while drilling...they would not set production casing unless the obvious..would just P & A.

The first step in drilling a well is to set your surface casing which acts as a guide for a straight drill stem. The only way to now 100% if there's oil is to drill to TD.

Conductor pipe is not needed on all rigs. On land rigs with earth pits or pits below ground level, there is no need for it.

Surface pipe is to protect fresh water zones and hold the BOP, on land. Hold BOP on offshore wells.
