Actually, it's a routine that shouldn't be needed much anymore, since the mailbox count should be staying pretty accurate.

What it does is recalculate what the mailbox number should be. There used to be (and still may be) ways to fool the system into subtracting when it shouldn't subtract. It's supposed to be used if the count is inaccurate, which should only happen rarely if ever now.
