It was in 48 AD that Emperor Claudius married Julia Agrippina, daughter of Roman General Marcus. Born and brought up in Cologne in 50 AD she granted her birthplace the right of a Roman city. From then it was called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (CCAA), meaning the Claudian Colony of Agrippinensi. The name had versions like Collen, Coln and finally Koln or Cologne.
