>>>Anybody here interested in a GROUP BUYOUT of the Infoseek assets?<<<dpb5
Dave- If I were a man of means I would definitely be interested in helping you develop that idea. Infoseek certainly isn't the premier search engine it once was, and IMO can't compete with the likes of "Google". And I'll agree with whoever posted that Infoseek now is nothing more than a bunch of servers in a room somewhere. But with the right people working on it, led by somebody with the genius and Internet savvy of a Steve Kirsch, Infoseek could again become the best search engine on the Internet.
I still think the Internet is big enough for more than one or two major all-purpose portals, and I don't think it's too late for a small upstart contender to compete with the big ones. The trick to staying in business would be living within their means. I don't think a portal has to have the most traffic, or even big traffic, if they just live within their means. It would mean slow growth, but slow growth would be a hell of a lot better than anything we've seen since Disney got involved.
Starting out, we would have very little content. But starting out, Yahoo and AOL had very little content. If we partnered with any of the many top notch financial sites we'd have more than Disney gave us with the nonexistent MoneyScope or Money Section. If Disney would throw in the message board forum we'd have the best message boards on the Internet. Partnering with ANY news outlet would be better than the news we got from GO.com. Those four elements: a rebuilt Infoseek search engine, the boards, and partnerships with a financial site and a news outlet is all we would need to get started. We would have a better start than Infoseek ever had.
