Pulselink - Profile
HQ: San Diego, CA

Founded: June 2000

Management: CEO is Bruce Watkins and co-founder/CTO is John Santhoff. They founded the company in Panama City, FL but moved to San Diego in 2001 to get closer to the telecommunications hub.

Investors: Company is entirely funded by Kuwaiti companies!? $38M in funding, most recently a $30M round in April 2004 from Mobile Telecommunications Co., National Investments Co., Jamson Holdings, and six public Kuwaiti firms.

Business Model: Fabless chip developer for Ultra Wideband (UWB) applications. Pulse-Link will use UWB as a high-speed alternative to WiFi LAN technology with a range of 30 to 40 meters. Will initially focus on markets that can absorb a higher price point, such as high-rate wireless LAN in the government security sector and cable TV network applications (up to 1 Gbit/s downstream). PulseLink is unique in its pursuit of longer-range UWB communications, beyond 10-meter single-room applications pursued by other UWB companies. Technnology will double the bandwidth available to cable TV systems with data capacities exceeding one gigabit - great for HDTV and other bandwidth hogs.

Competitors: Artimi, Staccato Communications, Alereon, and Wisair. Public market competitors are: Intel, Philips Semiconductors, STM Microelectronics, and Freescale Semiconductor.

Dirt: For a company focussed on the digital home, interesting that it is not in bed with the Intel crowd. Expect commercial roll-out by mid-2005.
