#16418 RE: VIKING163 #16416

Fingers crossed and KC had no time for last minute heroics,

After the Giants’ 27-16 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, Manning talked less about his three touchdown passes and more about the heel injury that forced him to leave in the fourth quarter.

Before anyone else could bring up the dreaded word, Manning said it — Achilles’ — as in Achilles’ tendon, the sort of injury that can ruin a season and damage a career. No, Manning said, that was not the problem.

“I kind of knew, after a second, it wasn’t that,” Manning said. “I could stand up and walk around and put some pressure on it. I was more relieved after that.”

Still, he was good for only one more play — a short screen pass to Hakeem Nicks that turned into a 54-yard touchdown. It gave the Giants a 27-3 lead. David Carr replaced Manning on the next possession.

The severity and exact diagnosis of the injury will probably not be known until Monday, Manning said. The Giants called it a bruised heel. And, in a collision sport known for dreadful injuries, it came without contact.

Manning hurt the heel while dropping back early in the fourth quarter to pass to Steve Smith, who had 11 receptions for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Manning said he felt the twinge before he threw to Smith on a pass that fell incomplete. After releasing the ball, he seemed to lose his balance and fall forward before quickly scrambling to his feet.

“Anytime you feel a pull or a strain, especially down there, you don’t know what it is,” Manning said.

“I don’t think it’s awful. I’ve been injured worse before.” However, he added, “There is some discomfort.”

After one more play, Manning watched the rest of the game from the sideline wearing a cap. When asked whether he could have come back, Manning said: “I don’t know. Maybe.”
