In union situations- more often than not there is a lot of political "strong arming" to ensure union workers get the work.
Ask an independent carpenter trying to work in New York ;-)
Regardless of the rhetoric- cost of living, what qualifies as being middle class etc... is much lower in WY than those states with dominant union presence. I understand- results and reality can be frustrating :-)
