This kind of thing has happened in the past, btw. Not sure if you're familiar with SLJB.

Long story but basically some dirty business partners came in to direct a legitimate family construction co's public entity. The company was expanding and had legit revs in the millions. But, the PRs started getting crazy. Some press investigated it and revealed the suspicious facts of it all. Then the SEC brought it all down.

The company still operates and is likely fundamentally sound even though it went from trading at .20ish down to, well, today it's sitting at .0003. Sometimes things don't blow over.
