They measure drilling depth from the rig floor which varies but can be 50 to 150 ft above sea level. So once the drillstring reaches sea level the bit would more or less already be 100' below the drill floor.

We had this discussion when they first announced the drilling depths, sorry you missed it. According to those with drilling experience the 11,600 depth is from sea level, so it is only some 6000 feet into the sea bed. Hopefully, this will change, according to past wells drilled, it does happen at times. How frequently, and under what circumstances, I don't know. I assume if it is still looking good, they would still drill. But, if their desire is to keep the price down, who knows. GLTUA
