Concerning the song, interesting, my grandpa was a railroad man.
My father told me this story.
Often they would get railroad cars full of sacks of coffee beans. Each weighted 400 lbs. a piece.
As a supervisor my grandpa would gather up the workers and give a demonstration on unloading the railroad car. He would unload a sack of beans on to his back and drop it on a pallet by himself. Then he'd turn and say, "I just did that by myself, I don't won't to see 4 men on one sack. If I can do it by myself then any two of you should be able to do the same." "If you can't you're fired."

Another story.
My father was just out of high school and his father was going to make him a "railroad man". He set him up on the tracks and then he'd flag the engineer to run the engine down the tracks. "Don't jump off the tracks till I tell you", he barked.
My father said little by little the train was picking up speed and heading right at him. "Don't move", "Don't move" his father would caution him. At the last second his father would yell, "OK Jump!
He told me he wasn't sure which would have been worse...Getting run over or the ass woopin he would have gotten from his father.

Certainly, a different breed back then.
