Correct if you can keep it from being copied or reverse engineered then you can just keep it private forever.
I worked with an electronics company and when we developed something we didn't want copied and didn't want to go through the patent process we removed all part stamps and encapsulated it in opaque black epoxy so if someone were to try and take it apart it would most likey break up and/or could not be reproduced.
