"NEOM's patent covers one particular way (indirect) the DM and QR codes CAN be used. It does not cover the way(s?) they ARE mostly used throughout the world as well as in this country. "

Wow jonesieatl, that statement sounds like it came from EFF! I completely DISAGREE the patent covers one method.

If you read this letter from NeoMedia's Attroney, you can see the patent covers many different "Indirect" methods:

IMO, JP explained it better.

Although it is true that the direct method is used more often that the indirect method, it is also true that indirect method is the more powerful method! The Indirect method is the only one that can be tracked and monetized and at the end of the day that is what matters!

Also, if you have ever read the patents and their claims you will quickly come to the conclusion that the inventors have endeavored to think of virtually every imaginable way the tech could be used and thus have it covered by the patent! When I read them some years ago I was amazed by the technical detail of the claims! These are very smart people who have went to great lengths to have their method/idea protected!

Gibber: And to take Jones comment one further: The patent is not limited to 2D technology - a UPC will work just fine and Mobile Tag is using the patent for 1D symbologies. 2D symbologies were designed for mobile apps because older phones had problems reading 1D. As the camera technology advances, 1D will become a really big deal both to advertisers and NeoMedia. For advertisers, using the UPC prevents having to use a secondary code on packaging. For NeoMedia, the UPC is an ideal tool since it has to be processed indirectly (in today's ecosystem).

So, the '048 covers any symbology, and one of the indirect processes.
