Updates and news is always "played off of" as you aptly put it. Stocks would stay stagnant if it were not the case. I still see NITE selling at the bid to buyers and then raising the bid price and never taking it up on volume that it created. Sure seems obvious to me who the culprit is when you speak of "manipulation". However, it plays into the hands of others making a market in this stock.
Solid news coming in the future will certainly have an impact, but I doubt it will deter flipping and reloading. That will stay with us all the way up I'm afraid.
