two timer all the american car companies screwed up they rolled out Hybrids in a high profile event in 1994 at Clinton White House.. but it turned out to be all lip service.. but the Japanese Car companies didn't know that this was just a horse and pony show and freaked out! Toyota and Honda started hybrid programs the day after that white house event and you are seeing the results.
that said the Chevy Volt is going to leap over Toyota and Honda technology wise.. mark my words it is going to be a sensation when it comes out the end of 2010. it is going to have a 100 MPG rating from EPA.
