Comb

Actually I think Banias was designed to be what it was. On the other hand there is no reason that Dothan with an odmc and a fat fpu should have that much trouble with Opteron.

Maybe Prescott doesn't come into it's own until 65nm. On the surface there is no real reason to think K8's current success is anything but temporary.

What surprises me in reading the comments of many AMD supporters is the acceptance the despite Intel's history it should be expected to collapse in the face of a minor competitor.

These sorts of comments seem to fit with the same types of comments regarding the stupidity of the buying public.

None of the above appears to track with your apparent level of understanding and awareness so I am at a loss to the reasoning your using.

"Why push BTX?"
That is actually a pretty short sighted question; no offense intended. Power is going up, and up, and up. Eventually a Banias based design could outgrow ATX power handling. I think there are other things about BTX that make it attractive, particularly the quieter operation and better video card cooling... Long term, I suspect it will also be a bit cheaper.
How many parallel CPU development projects do you think they can support?
This is tricky, because some projects are done across multiple sites. Personally, I was not even aware there was a CPU design site in Texas, that was doing Tejas... At rough count I come up with the following:
Oregon 2
Santa Clara 2
Folsom 1
Israel 1
Texas 1
Hudson 1
new Alpha team 1
That's the ones I know about; 9 CPU design teams.
I do think they realized they were stretched a bit thin, which resulted in the cancelation of tejas, along with the 3 or 4 follow on chips to that design.

In terms of results, you have the Dothan shipping in volume. It clearly does not have the same performance as the prescott core, but is coming close. I suspect it will be the 65nm node, or even the 45nm node where we really see the desktop cross over to a Banias based design.

combjelly,

re: Yonah, Conroe

Do you remember the highlights of these 2? Yonah, I guess, will be the dual core mobile Dothan descender. Is Conroe a desktop equivalent of the same chip or something else?
