StocksR4Me, your specification is a little confusing -

Still looking for a 1-2 tier vendor for a dual opteron 5U tower server using U320 hard drives. Preferably 4-6 drive bays with dual controller.

1. When I see 5U I think of a rack mount system, not a tower. Is this going to be horizontally mounted in a rack?

2. 5U is a bunch of space. You can get dual Opteron servers in 1U configurations, bundled with a disk expansion chassis. I'd think you can get the combo to fit in 5U. For instance the HP Proliant DL145 is a 1U dual-Opteron server -

Here is a 2U disk expansion chassis:

So you can get the server & two slim expansion boxes to fit in 5U!

Here is a 4U expansion box:

Does this help?

StocksR4Me.

Since your boss is an IBM fan, why don't you go with a eServer 325 configured with a ServerRAID 6m card and a EXP400 expansion drive bay. The EXP400 holds 14 drives and configuring it with RAID 5 gives you upto about 2 TB. The EXP400 runs around $2K (with corporate discounts).

Re: looking for a 1-2 tier vendor for a dual opteron

Your best bet right now is to go with a Sun V40z configured with 2 CPUs.

It has room for CD, floppy, and an additional 5 SCSI disks (6 SCSI disks if you don't install CD/floppy).

You'll have to either install it on its side (not a problem, but you may not want to do it), or let it sit on a shelf.
