The total market for pet food and supplies grew more than 33% in real terms from 2002–2007, as pet owners spent more on products for their pets that were less utilitarian and more fun.

Consumers also became more discerning about the quality and makeup of products they fed their pets in light of the wide-scale pet food recall begun in March 2007. The market is expected to remain dynamic through 2012 as consumers continue to treat their pets as well as, or better than, they treat themselves.

Evolution of the pet

This is one mature puppy, with the expansion of the two major national retail chains and a saturation of animal products to hit the market recently. No wonder there's been an evolution in technology, people are treating their pets as members of the family with special diets and even a DVD available for furry friends! The cat fight is on for more value added and price based competition in this relatively concentrated environment, and will only get more intense from external sources.

In-depth industry market research presented in a logical and consistent format. Including 36 pages of insights covering industry conditions, key statistics, competitor analysis and market share, product and customer segmentation and a 5 year forecast.
