EMPOWER ® YES! Frequently Asked Questions What is EMPOWER ® YES!? EMPOWER ® YES! is a total passenger in-flight entertainment system that provides a wide choice of movies, music, games, messaging, Internet, and Email. What makes EMPOWER ® YES! different from other IFE systems? EMPOWER ® YES! has some unique features that make it lighter and lower cost than traditional IFE systems but most airlines would consider its high reliability its greatest feature. First, the system is based on a powerful “ruggedized” tablet PC for every passenger. Second, the data network is wireless using the WiFi5 IEEE-802.11a standard. Third, EMPOWER ® YES! is true AVOD allowing passengers to choose their own unique entertainment experience. Finally, EMPOWER ® YES! is based on the proven and reliable EMPOWER ® in-seat power system. Is EMPOWER ® YES! certified? EMPOWER ® YES! is based on the EMPOWER® and the EMPORT® systems which have been certified for use on Boeing and Airbus aircraft for several years. The total system will be certified to DO-160D for use on the initial installation in the latter half of 2004. Why use a wireless network? Wireless networks offer lighter weight and lower cost due to the reduction in cabling throughout the aircraft. Will the wireless network interfere with the aircraft systems? The wireless network operates in the 5GHz band reserved for unlicensed radio devices. There are no aircraft systems operating in this band and testing has shown no interference issues. Secondly, the output power is very low, less than 50mW, as required by the FCC. Does the wireless network have enough bandwidth to support audio and video for all users at the same time? In short, YES! Actually the network does not have to stream audio and video during flight since the audio and video content is stored locally at each seat. Updates to the stored content are accomplished on the ground between flights. During the flight, the bandwidth of the network is available to passengers for email, Internet browsing, messaging, and even online games. Is the stored audio and video content secure with EMPOWER ® YES!? YES! Movies and other video and music are secured through local encryption and the user is isolated from the operating system and hard drive. Additionally, there are no user accessible ports to allow data transfers to personal devices. Even if a user does manage to ‘hack’ into the hard drive, they will only be able to disturb the local content.
