SemiconEng - First virus emerges aimed at AMD 64-bit processors
Two lessons to be learned here:
1) NX (no execute) protection is not the panacea for virus attacks, droid rantings notwithstanding.
2) Never underestimate the determination of virus authors to find ways to compromise a given platform.
Slightly OT: The issue of NX protection seems analogous to federal campaign finance reform, embodied by the McCain-Feingold act. Both Democrats and Republicans have used so-called 527 groups to get around the restrictions of McCain-Feingold. In the end, people will always use their wealth to purchase influence and power. Only the repeal of the First Amendment will stop this, and no one seriously wants this.
