When Christians Misbehave: Self-Induced Religious Fit

aajoeyjo
March 20, 2007

From the series, "When Christians Misbehave"

This is a two part benediction at a public college in Texas given by the very religious valedictorian of that school. This came after some wrangling about whether to even have a benediction, since some students objected. This is unbridled Christian advertising in the form of a self induced fit on stage.

At the near end of the video, the brown-uniformed woman walking up the aisle is a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper, going up on stage to render aid. She obviously doesn't think it's a very serious emergency. I don't think anyone else does either.

If you have raw video of Christians misbehaving, feel free to send it to me, and I'll edit it up real nice, and post it. :o)

Gail Lowe: Perry Picks Creationist To Run State Education Board

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has chosen Gail Lowe, an outspoken [ http://halfempth.blogspot.com/2009/01/sboe-member-gail-lowe-life-of-smug.html ] creationist, to run the state's Board of Education.

It was actually the less controversial choice. Cynthia Dunbar, reportedly under consideration for the post, believed [ http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6514838.html ] government should be guided by a "biblical litmus test" and thought public education was a "subtly deceptive tool of perversion." (She home-schooled her own children.) She has also endorsed conspiracy theories suggesting [ http://www.politicker.com/texas/21955/sboe-member-obama-means-end-america ] President Obama is not a natural-born citizen.

Lowe, on the other hand, thinks evolution should be taught [ http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/082407dntexevolution.36418e1.html ] and "kids ought to be able to hold religious beliefs and still study science without any conflict." But in 2008, she took the position [ http://www.teachthemscience.org/texas/sboe#lowe ] that "biology textbooks which do not teach both the scientific strengths and weaknesses of the theory of evolution must be rejected by the board." She has voted against new textbooks that do not contain those "weaknesses." She is a newspaper editor, not a teacher.

Lowe will replace [ http://www.kbtx.com/state/headlines/50478197.html ] Don McLeroy, another self-described creationist and dentist whose reappointment was blocked by Democrats. He had been chairman of the board since 2007 and will remain a member.
