But the issue is really silicon information turns more than anything. With the 9 layers of metal AMD is using it probably takes about 4 months from wafer start to some meaningful sort data. It will take another month to get speed data on a packaged part, and another couple of months to get some reliability data on that.
Iff they get it right the very first time, it will take at least six months. I have never heard of this happening. For instance, Intel had fully functional SRAM on 65nm last November, but will not introduce product for about 2 years after that. It gives them several turns through the factory where they can get material out, evaluate it, and make appropriate changes. With a one year cycle you really only get two oe three spins of silicon before you start shipping... It ain't gonna happen.

No. Oh sure, if everything worked perfectly it might. But when you are talking about over a hundred million transistors, it won't. Even if it would, planning on it happening that way is stupid. 18 months is a likely minimum, 24 is more like it. The question is, do you fail to plan, or plan to fail? The result will be the same...
