Tench, there are many reasons why a Prescott system uses more power than an Athlon 64 system. Here is the reference showing it does:

There was a similar article, I think in c't a while back.
Other factors have a multiplier or additive effect to the CPU power difference, like power supply inefficiency, fans, chipset power.
