Typically I look at the CBOE S&P 500 index put/call ratio. It normally ranges from 1.00 to 2.00. When the index gets above 3.0, it's a signal according to Scamman's Rule of 3 that they're getting ready to take the market down for a correction/drop. That's how I use it. Rule of 3 is only on a closing reading.
