True, if the algorithms are optimized for 8 gp registers (however that might be done), then it might not get as much benefit as it otherwise might have.

I doubt a lot of stuff is written today that is hand assembled. Compilers automatically take advantage of the registers. Some of the extra registers are automatically used for passing arguments

As has been pointed out, Itanium needs everything at least compiled for it, if not written specifically for it.

Which at last count is over 1600 apps, over 200 for Altix
alone.

That is, unless a Celeron 800 level of performance is sufficient.

With IA32 EL the I2's x86 performance is more like that
of a Xeon MP at the same frequency.
