Spin-off really is the big question.

Does anyone know of any examples that showcase how that might pan-out? Is it typically 1 for 1 shares or can it be anything under the sun, which might seriously undermine everyone's initial investments.

Oracle is a prime example of a penny stock success story. Even the stock splitting, which occurred multiple times over a 10+ year period, helped to seriously increase the PPS value, rather then diluting the heck out of the stock.
