#40899 RE: mas #40894

mas,

I think I will time it with a Nvidia PCI-Express/Soundstorm Nforce4, 2Gb of memory and 512Mb SM3 Doom 3 card ! Probably also on WinXP64 release to make it a 64bit box purely !

Sounds like a good plan, and I may do that as well (including graphics).

Graphics performance is an important component, as I just recently found out. I tried my favorite game RTCW - Enemy Territory - on an Athlon64 3200 with an nVidia 5200 on an office computer vs. Barton also at 2 GHz and apparently much higher performing nVidia 4600 I have at home, and the performace was unbearable, not playable at 1280x1024 - native resolution of the flat panel monitor. Lower resolutions were just increasingly bad.

Eventually, I would like to have a flat panel 1900x1200 (again a measurable upgrade from my aging 21" 1600x1200 CRT) for my home computer, so the computer I will get should be able to keep up with it. So I will look at the reviews of new games to see if this is feasible.

I guess I would just like to have a new toy, but my old toy is still good enough to justify a new one.

Anyway, what I was curious when I tried the game on an office computer (which has an LCD monitor) how LCD monitors look and perform, but with so many variables, I didn't find out the answer, I don't really know how much the monitor contributed to the bad experience.
