Well, then you are against it. It is exactly what AMD is doing. It is a fantastic marketing move against the Celeron, long overdue.

If like-rated Semprons and A64s don't compare equivalently on the overlapping parts of the performance suite then AMD has a major PR disaster coming very soon!

Nonsense. Don't you get it? The "official" explanations for AMD PR rating systems have always been a joke. For some reason (I suspect it may be a legal issue/risk), they will not state what everyone with half a brain knows: AMD PR systems are designed to be compared with Intel "ratings", i.e. GHz.

To say it again:

Athlon64 PR is designed to be compared with Prescott GHz.

Sempron PR is designed to be compared with Celeron GHz.

The crap about a different "performance suite" is pure BS. It's really about a different brand for comparison. Prescott. Celeron. Prescott. Celeron. Athlon64. Sempron.

It's really very simple!

"Then I am against it"

I agree with you, but they clearly are doing it. There is no other way to read the available evidence.

"This does tell us that the benchmark suite for A64 is more comprehensive than the suite for Sempron. It leaves me wondering:

1. Is the Sempron performance suite a subset of the A64 suite?
2. How do application results compare in the places where both suites overlap?"

1. Yes
2. Just look at reviews to compare

1 thorough: "The new performance rating system is independent of any previous rating system and based solely on relative performance among other Sempron processors in a suite of benchmark suites. Specifically, AMD uses:

PC Magazine Business Winstone 2004
PC Magazine Content Creatoin Winstone 2004
SYSmark 2004 Office Productivity Overall
SYSmark 2004 Internet Content Creation Overall"

Note that the apps for the Athlon rating system are posted on the AMD site and it is a longer list of benchmarks.

For Athlon XP (K7) look here http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_3734_3750,00.html

That is 21 tests vs 4 tests on K7 Athlon vs Sempron.

For Athlon 64 (K8) I didn't see the benchmark suite but I'm sure someone has posted the link in the past. I don't know off the top of my head if it is the same as the K7 suite or not. Assuming it is you again have a 4 to 21 test ratio.
