Sin is defined in Scripture as disobedience to the revealed will of God. The concept of "original sin" aside (it is clearly taught in Scripture, by the way), the Bible tells us that the problem with man is Sin. Selfishness is a sin, but every man sins before God in many ways other than selfishness.
As I said, according to Scripture, Sin is the problem.
