AMD traditionally has attracted "bang for the buck minded" people. (This wording took me a minute ;-) ).
Now, the market currently is clearly shifting towards value-segments which I understand as an opportunity for leveraging this trend in AMDs favour.
As for how to do that, I am confident AMD used proper marketing-research to figure out what is perceived out there nowadays and made the branding and pricing decisions accordingly. (To put it around, I would be scared like h..ll if they did not)
In a nutshell, I would just allow the possibility that folks in Sunnyvale have some clue of their business. :))
