chipguy, if Sun continues to thrash on high end alternatives then I agree with your statement. They need to focus on a strategy and start communicating it, the sooner the better.
In every architecture transition you are going to lose formerly content customers who are now forced to qualify their next architecture. HP ran into this as they are transitioning several architectures to Itanium. Customers hate that. However, it is a necessary step, eventually you have to build on the core of customers who were convinced that you are taking care of them by giving them a roadmap into the future.
(I guess that's where the plug for Opteron comes in - hard to get a better x86 roadmap than that!)
For Sun, they had better get their act together while they still have a core of customers left.
